Lazzaro Morelli (30 October 1608 – 1690) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque period. Born in Ascoli Piceno, the son of the Florentine sculptor Fulgenzio Morelli, who also trained Lazzaro's cousin, the artist Giuseppe Giosafatti. Lazzaro is best known for having worked in the studio of Gianlorenzo Bernini, where he participated in Bernini's tomb of Pope Alexander VII Chigi and in the sculpting of the angels of the Ponte Sant'Angelo in Rome, to Bernini's sketches: his is the Angel with the scourge. He also sculpted the statue of Benignity, for the tomb monument for Clement X in St. Peter's Basilica. The tomb was designed by Mattia de' Rossi (1684) and the other sculptors were Ercole Ferrata (pope) and Giuseppe Mazzuoli (Clemency). He also completed some of the saints in the roof-line of the external colonnades of Piazza San Pietro.[1] He also participated in the decoration of the church of San Pietro Martire in Ascoli Piceno. Also of interest is the aedicule outside the church of San Francesco, used by the condemned led to execution.[2]
